Apple’s upcoming ‘iWatch’ smartwatch will feature a “slightly rectangular” face with a display that “likely measures 2.5 inches diagonally”, according to a new Reuters report today.
The report, which quotes sources “familiar with the matter”, claims that mass production of the device will start next month, with a commercial launch expected in October, falling in line with an earlier claim from The Nikkei Asian Review.
According to the report, Apple has assigned production of the device to Taiwan’s Quanta Computer Inc, which is currently in charge of production for the company’s iPod and MacBook product lines. It is unclear what role Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (or more commonly known as Foxconn), Apple’s primary manufacturer of iPhones and iPads, would play in the device’s production.
Reuters adds that Apple is targeting to ship 50 million units of the iWatch during the device’s initial year of release, but cautions that the figure is a preliminary estimate and is subject to change. Nikkei had previously claimed that Apple was targeting monthly production of 3 to 5 million units for the device, which would add up to a similar yearly figure.
Function-wise, the iWatch will reportedly be able to perform certain tasks individually, but would require a secondary paired device, such as an iPhone, to perform tasks such as messaging or voice chatting. Unsurprisingly, the iWatch will only be compatible with iOS devices, the report claims.
The iWatch will also feature wireless charging capabilities, which lines up with earlier Chinese media reports that Apple was testing wireless charging coils for use with the device.
Corroborating earlier rumours that the device will be a health and fitness tracker, Reuters quotes another source in saying that the iWatch will contain a sensor that monitors a user’s pulse, with Singapore-based Heptagon reportedly being short-listed as one of the suppliers for the feature.

The source added that the watch face will protrude slightly from the band, creating an arched shape, and will feature a touch interface and wireless charging capabilities.
