It looks like the iWatch rumour mill is beginning to ramp up. Shortly after a report by Reuters today claimed that Apple’s upcoming smartwatch would feature a 2.5″ display and wireless charging capabilities, The Wall Street Journal has chimed in with additional information on the device, revealing that Apple has “multiple designs” in the works and that the device would include “more than 10 sensors”.
Citing sources “familiar with the matter”, WSJ notes that Apple’s decision to include a significant number of sensors in the device is aimed at addressing an “overarching criticism of existing smartwatches that they fail to provide functions significantly different from that of a smartphone”.
The report adds that some of these sensors will track health and fitness, corroborating earlier claims that the iWatch would be a fitness-centric device. Apple had announced its foray into healthcare at its developers conference earlier this month, revealing an all-new Health app that serves to aggregate health and fitness data from various applications and devices.
The report also claims that the iWatch will come in multiple screen sizes, which appears to contradict Reuters’ claim of a 2.5″ display. Of course, Reuters could have been citing just one screen size that it had heard about from its sources, but it would be interesting to see how this pans out.
The iWatch is expected to launch in the second half of the year, with both reports hinting at an October launch date, which lines up with an earlier claim from The Nikkei Asian Review.

The smartwatch will likely come in multiple screen sizes, said one person familiar with the matter. Another person at a component supplier said shipments of the smartwatches are estimated to total between 10 million and 15 million units by the end of this year. The exact specifications of Apple’s smartwatch are still being finalized before mass production starts, said people familiar with the matter.
