Apple is working with several professional athletes to test its upcoming ‘iWatch’ smartwatch, 9to5Mac revealed in a report today, citing a source “with knowledge of the testing”.
According to the report, some of the notable names Apple has recruited include NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and professional ice hockey right winger Dustin Brown, along with an unnamed player from Major League Baseball team Boston Red Sox. The athletes have reportedly signed non-disclosure agreements with Apple with regard to the iWatch’s existence.
The news follows a report last month that Bryant was spotted on Apple’s campus meeting with the company’s design chief Jony Ive, with sources revealing that the pair were discussing about “upcoming products”. Speculation then had pointed to the LA Lakers shooting guard’s involvement in testing for the iWatch, which has long been rumoured to be a fitness-centric device.
Yesterday, a report from The Wall Street Journal had claimed that the iWatch would come with more than 10 different sensors, some of which would track health and fitness statistics. The device is expected to be released in the second half of the year, with several sources pointing to an October launch date.
