YouTube channel TechSmartt has posted a video comparing dummy units of the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 to several other smartphones, including the iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
The dummy units are apparently being used by case manufacturers to test out cases for the iPhone 6. However, it should be noted that these may not necessarily be Apple’s final designs as case manufacturers have been known to gamble on specifications based on rumours prior to official announcements.
Design-wise, the mockups shown in the video appear to be consistent with mockups revealed in earlier reports, the most recent of which being a space gray model unveiled by Korean site Seeko yesterday. Pilled-shaped volume buttons, rounded edges and a relocated sleep/wake button on the side all line up with previously rumoured specifications for the device.
Perhaps the most interesting bit of information revealed by the video is that the 5.5-inch model is “ridiculously huge”, with comparisons to the Note 3 and an LG G3 showing that the iPhone 6 is taller and bigger than both. For reference, the Note 3 itself features a 5.7-inch display and the LG G3 sports a similar 5.5-inch display.
However, even though the 5.5-inch model’s huge size gives it “true phablet status”, its large size might make it a little cumbersome to handle, according to the presenter, who even remarks that users might need a stylus to navigate the device comfortably.
In addition, the repositioned sleep/wake switch on the right side of the device might also be difficult to toggle with one hand on the 5.5-inch model for some consumers, whereas the 4.7-inch model appears to hit the “sweet spot” when it comes to one-handed use.
Both models of the iPhone 6 are expected to launch in the second half of the year, with earlier reports indicating that the 4.7-inch model would likely be released earlier due to production issues with the 5.5-inch variant.
